Learn how to play the song Mean by Taylor Swift with this free acoustic guitar song lesson. Mean is off of Taylor’s third studio album entitled “Speak Now “. It was released in May of 2011. This song received good success in the US and Canada. It debuted at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 List and number 10 on the Canadian Hot 100 list. Onto the lesson shall we?

This is an easy version of this song and only requires that you know several basic chords. For this particular tutorial, you will need to use a capo on the 4th fret. The chord shapes are: A Minor, G Major (Marty plays a slightly different version of the G Major chord in the lesson below, but a normal G Major chord will work just fine), F Major (Don’t worry. You do not need to know the Barre Chord Version of F Major. Marty demonstrates a much easier way to play it below.) and C Major.

The strumming pattern: D D DU DU, or Down Down Down Up Down Up. Marty will demonstrate the strumming pattern if you are not sure how to play it.

You will need to use a capo on the first fret for this particular version. If you are not sure what a capo is or how to use one, follow this link for information on how to use a guitar capo.

The chord shapes you will need to know for this song are: G Major, D Major, A Major . The good news is, that most of the song uses only those three basic beginner guitar chords. There is only one minor change and that comes in the chorus where you will have to play a B Minor Chord. Erich plays the full B Minor Barre Chord in this lesson. If you are having trouble with this difficult chord, I have a little cheat for you. Follow this link for an easy version of the B Minor Chord that isn’t a barre chord. It may not have the same full sound that the barre chord has, but its a descent enough replacement.
