You may have heard people at guitar repair shops or other guitarists talk about guitar action, but what is guitar action? Guitar action is the height of the guitar strings above the fretboard. Obviously, the higher strings make the guitar more difficult to play and lower strings make the guitar easier to play. Both excessively high action and excessively low action can cause problems with your guitar. In this article, I want to show you how to adjust the action on your guitar.

Adjusting your action is probably the most common guitar repair that I see in my guitar repair shop. Most people just ask for a guitar setup, but what they really want is their action lowered. There are three steps to properly lowering the action on a guitar, but first we need to look at what is causing the action problem.

Learn How to Play “Firework” by Katy Perry on Acoustic Guitar

Learn how to play the song “Firework” by Katy Perry with this free acoustic guitar lesson.

Firework was written by Katy Perry, Mikkel S. Eriksen, Tor Erik Hermansen, Sandy Wilhelm and Ester Dean.  It is from her third studio album entitled “Teenage Dream ” Released in 2010. First Cut is the Deepest Guitar Lesson

Learn how to play the song The First Cut Is the Deepest  as performed by Sheryl Crow. This song was actually written by Cat Stevens and originally released by P.P. Arnold in the spring of 1967.  This song has been covered by  a number of different artists over the years, but only a handful became popular.  Cheryl’s version is one of them.  You can learn more about this song over at Wikipedia.

This version of the song, taught by Marty Schwartz in the video lesson below, is an easy beginner acoustic version of the song.  The chords needed to play this song are:  D Major, G Major and A Major.  That is it. No other chords needed.

The strumming pattern is also quite easy: DDD   DU (Where D= Down, U= Up).

New Acoustic Guitar Chord Progression for the Beginner

Another excellent lesson from David Taub with Next level guitar.  This is a great lesson for the absolute beginner out there who is looking for a simple way to take your guitar playing to another level.

In this lesson, David will first teach you how to play 4 very basic guitar chords.

These are all very easy chords that David will be teaching you that only require one or two fingers to play and they are: E Minor, G Major, Asus2 and Am9.  With the G Major chord, you are welcome to play a normal G Major chord.  If you aren’t able to , David will teach you a scaled down version of a G. You will only need one finger to play this G chord. Watch the video for a complete demonstration on how to play all of these chords, or you can click the links above that will take you to separate lessons on how to play each chord.

David will then teach you several different strumming patterns to use with these 4 chords.

Chord Progression Lesson From Next Level Guitar

This is another fantastic video guitar lesson from David Taub with Next Level Guitar. If you are a beginner, stuck in a rut and tired of playing the same old boring chord progressions, then this lesson will be especially helpful and enjoyable.

David is going to demonstrate how to play something that sounds beautiful without being impossible to play.

One trick that makes this chord progression easier is that David is using moveable chords.  This means you can play the same chord shape at different locations on the guitar fret board.  You just slide your hand up and down the fretboard while maintaining the same chord shape.

Apart from being fairly easy to play, these chords also sound quite beautiful as they utilize the open strings of your guitar.  Learn exactly how its done by watching the lengthy video tutorial below.
