Here is a cool little video lesson for all of you blues guitar lovers.  This is taught by one of my favorite guitar instructors, Marty Schwartz from GuitarJamz.  In this lesson, he explains how to play a cool blues guitar progression in the key of E using the chords: E7, A7 and B7 (If you don’t already know how to play these chords, then click each chord for a lesson on how to play them, or just watch the video below as Marty demonstrates how to play each chord.)

He begins the lesson with a very basic progression playing each chord normally in their open positions.  He then teaches you how to add some really cool embellishments to the chords to really make things interesting. For example, when playing the E7 chord, place your pinky on the 3rd fret of the B string. You can also place your pinky on the 3rd fret of the high E string. Practice playing the chord normally and switching your pinky on and off  between those two strings.

For the A7 chord, you can simply add your pinky to the 3rd fret of the high E string for a really bluesy sound.  Then take those embellishments you just learned for both the E7 and A7 chords and add them while playing the entire chord progression.  This is only the tip of the iceberg.  Watch the video tutorial below for more cool blues guitar tricks!

Here is a great blues guitar lesson from Marty Schwartz for all of you acoustic blues enthusiasts. This lesson is designed for both beginners and intermediate players.

In this video tutorial, Marty talks about some different concepts that will ultimately help you put together awesome blues guitar solos.

Marty will first teach you how to play the Open E Blues Guitar Scale. Then, he will teach you a fun little practice routine using that scale.   This practice routine is simply playing the same Open E Blues Scale, but instead of playing it with a normal rhythm, he demonstrates how to play it in triplets.  Then from there, he will show you how to play three fairly simple licks from the same scale. Finally, you will learn how to combine all of these concepts and improvise your own cool licks and solos.

Blues Slide Guitar Lesson For Beginners

Slide Guitar (Also Know As Bottleneck Guitar) is a unique sounding style of guitar that is often associated with The Blues, but is also used in other Genres of music like Hawaiian, Jazz and Rock to name a few.  No one knows for sure who invented it, but when you mention slide guitar, you will almost always think of The Blues.

Slide guitar is named as such because of the sliding motion across the strings which produces its distinctive sound.  You can only produce this distinctive sound by using what is known as a “Slide”,  which is just tubular piece of metal, glass or other material that you wear on  your sliding finger. Originally, in Blues Slide Guitar, a guitarist used a bottleneck as the slide, hence the name “Bottleneck” guitar.

The Blues Turnaround is a special kind of lick, that can be simple or complex, and is typically played during the last two measures of a chord progression, quite commonly in the 12 bar blues.

Its a signal that your chord progression is about to end and go back to the beginning or “turn around”.

The best way to understand how to play a Blues Turnaround is to see one in action.

Beginner Guitar Chord Tutorial – G7

The G7 Guitar Chord (also known as a Dominant G 7th Chord)  is found in the G Major Scale: G A B C D E F# G. It is made up of the 1, 3, 5 and b7 positions of this scale. Meaning the notes G, B, D and F. The “b7″ symbol translates to a “flattened 7th” which simply means that we take the 7th step of the G Major Scale, “F#” and flatten it by a 1/2 step to arrive at our “F” note.

This chord is often referred to as a Blues chord. Once you learn to play it, you will understand why. It just has a real bluesy sound to it.

You can see just how to finger this chord by referring to the diagram chart below.

Here is a key that will help you read the chart:

Everything on the above chart should be self explanatory, except for the last three in the third column. They may need a bit of explaining. The O, or open symbol, simply means that you do not press down on any notes on that string. The X means you do not strum that particular string. The Barre symbol means you need to barre that particular fret. When you barre a fret you are pressing down on multiple strings at the same time with one finger.

Chord Playing Tip

Be sure that you are pressing down on the strings hard enough and play each string one at a time to make sure you have a nice clean sound. If any of the strings buzz or sound muted, then something is not right.
