Hi

Well, I will probably sound really thick now, but - hey ho...

How in all that is good's name is the G Major chord supposed to be played? I know that I am an absolute, complete beginner (only had my first lesson at Music College 3 days ago, but I have been trying to practice the teacher's set excersice to develop agility in my fingers (I have problems with my fingers on my hands, a little bit like RSI and find it difficult to stretch my fingers, although they are long and I trained in typing years ago, which I use regularly...).

It just seems absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to be able to contort my fingers to be able to ever do the G Major chord - I might be being stupid, but the way it is written on the site it seems like all the fingers would have to contort over each other to play the chord... but then, I thought, no; you talk about "mastering the technique" so I assume this chord is achieved by sliding the fingers to each fret, as described - cannot see how even master players could learn to cross over the fingers in order to play the notes...

I sing too and also wanted to learn guitar for years now - recently thought about learning to compose my own songs, as I sing in an A Cappella group and it would be nice to have acoustic accompaniment, occasionally...

I know all the stuff about building up finger strength over time, developing callouses so it becomes less painful etc etc and I am a person always up for a challenge and very optimistic... however, I am not as optimistic as I was before buying my guitar and trying to get to grips with things... My classes are for thirty weeks, so hopefully, by the end of that time, I will at least be able to play a simple tune like "Bobby Shaftoe" - but I am increasingly losing confidence...

Heidi - I am glad you are enjoying the site and that you are finding it helpful. Good luck and Keep on playing!

Tired - It is normal to feel the strain of playing guitar. Your hands and your fingertips are going to hurt for some time until you develop calluses on your fingertips and strength in your hands.

I also love to sing and started playing guitar so that I could compose my own songs as well. I am still working on that....

I realized that I had to put my singing aside for a while in order to learn the guitar first. Your guitar playing will prove to be very difficult if you try and sing and play at the same time in the beginning.

Learn how to play guitar first, then slowly start to incorporate the singing....
